An enjoyable way to pass part of an afternoon. No Quarter is located in East Nashville just across the river from downtown and the honkey-tonks of broadway. So my visit informed me that I no longer enjoy pinball, unless I can find tables from 50 years ago-and I do enjoy a friendly bartender and a good craft brew. The newer ones are all blazoned with movies, rock bands, TV shows, or superheroes, and the game play is marked by lots of distracting flashy lights, multi-level madness and amped-up music. My machines were Fireball, Gorgar, Avatar. Back when I played almost daily, the machines had not yet been computerized, nor did they have merchandising tie-ins to popular culture. It's hbeen, I thinkl decades since I've played pinball, and as I perused the options I realized why. Their craft beer selection is outstanding, I had a very tasty buratta and my wife chose a fine IPA. It's gratifying to find a theme so well done. They've gotten a competent painter to do game-related murals on their walls, and behind the bar a couple of older arcade game cabinets are converted to hold taps or bottles. I think there are over 30 pinball tables, along with several other arcade games, filling up the room that once was the customer service counter and also the former lift bays. The proprietors of this establishment have taken what was once an auto service center and converted it to a good bar and grill that's a shrine to pinball. I love seeing arcades in this day and age. I imagine it was overplayed to the point where it isn't working optimally. Medieval madness flippers felt like they need a tune up or something. AC/DC had a bumper that had been taped and barely hanging on. Some of the tables (Cactus Canyon, Godzilla, and Star Wars) played great and some not so well. I don't know if the volume is too low, the other tables drown it out, or the music overhead drowns it out. Playing AC/DC felt lifeless as I couldn't hear the music or sounds. Most of the pinball tables I played I couldn't hear the actual machine. I want the pinball lights to come to life in a dark room. Next time I go I will try at night to see if the experience is better. Air conditioning kept things nice and cool. Easy swipe card system to start a game of pinball. Alcohol and food available but I did not have any.
